The Argentine Sounds of Sex, Sadness and Society... for Classical Flautists
Astor Piazzolla’s musical output appeals worldwide to flutists of a classical tradition, and almost twenty years since his death, the 6 Tango-Etudes pour flûte seule and his Histoire Du Tango have been made staples of the flute repertoire.
I am currently undertaking PhD research at the University of Huddersfield where my work centres on observing the different approaches to current performing traditions of the flute works of Astor Piazzolla. In my research I draw upon a number of methodologies to further the understanding of Piazzolla’s musical language by addressing performance issues and approaches to interpretation with a direct application for ‘classical’ flutists.
By contextualizing the exploration of tango we can delve into wider interpration issues that occur when we are 'outsiders' looking into a new genre of music.
