Jessica delivered a day of teaching, masterclasses and tango work for the talented musicians at the University of Hull as part of the university's 2011 'Instrumental Day'. Many thanks to the instrumentalists, who were enthusiastic, energetic and open-minded to new musical techniques.

What do genres like tango and salsa musical performance have in common for study? The two conference organisers Jessica and Leeds- based salsa flautist, Dr. Miller, held an innovative Caribbean and Latin American Music Study Day (CLAM) at the University of Huddersfield on 12 November, 2011. This event attracted funding from the Royal Musical Association and drew 35 scholars and performers. In addition, there were contributions via Skype from overseas experts in the USA and France, plus a tango specialist in Japan. Dr Henry Stobart from Royal Holloway/ University of London ended the day with a lecture on his recent field work in Bolivian music. Other contributors included Frank Cudjoe on the musics of the Caribbean island of Carriacou; Fiorella Montero Díaz on Andean fusion stars with white appeal; and Sara McGuinness, who described a Cuban and Congolese music fusion project in London. In the 'City of Light' Jessica presented her tango and performance paper entitled The Construction of Musical ‘Filth’: exploring the essence of mugre for an enhanced musical understanding of tango performance at the Colloque international Tango : Créations/Circulations in Paris, France. This international conference in French, English and Spanish, gathers researchers working on the various aspects of
tango (music, dance, poetry) from diverse disciplinary orientations (historical, sociological, anthropological, musicological),
and includes debates with musicians and dancers, as well as a concert and a milonga.
This event was organized by the Centre de Recherches sur les Arts et le Langage (CRAL / CNRS) and the ANR Program Globamus, with the help of the Maison des Cultures du Monde (MCM) and the research team Patrimoine et Langages Musicaux of the Université de Paris 4. June 2011

Six hours south on a bus from Buenos Aires will bring you to Mar De Plata, a sweeping coastal town on the Atlantic coast. It is also the birth place of Astor Piazzolla. Here I am standing where the tango composer was born-- what a treat to see this location.

April 2010-Great Northern Museum, Newcastle, UK
Presenting her doctoral research on Piazzolla's tango for classical flautists' to the public, Jessica engaged with museum goers and academics alike at a VITAE Northeast of England event. This showcase was held at the Great North Museum in Newcastle Upon Tyne and there Jessica was awarded the prestigious 'Highly Commended Award' for her work by this research organisation.Vitae is a national organisation championing the personal, professional and career development of doctoral researchers and research staff in higher education institutions and research institutes.You can see a full article and Jessica's research poster here.
April 2010- Flute and Yoga Class with Jessica Quinones and Anna Semelyen, York, UK, St. Olave's Chruch Hall Flute playing is a physical activity and a knowledge to help prepare your body and mind for playing would benefit any flautist! This was a yoga class designed for flute players, especially designed to show a routine to help flute practice in all aspects including tension, breathing and concentration. This class was led by a qualified British Wheel of Yoga instructor Anna Semlyen. With input from Jessica into what flute players need to utilize their body to make flute playing a more 'integrative experience', a group of flute players left feeling relaxed and peaceful.
March 2010- Masterclass with the Keswick School Flautists, Cumbria, UK Set in the beautiful Lake District, the Keswick School invited Jessica for the second year in a row to deliver a workshop to the school flautists. She gave a masterclass for selected soloists and work with their flute group on ensemble skills and musicality-- and some fun extended techniques to improve tone development.

December 2009, St. Saviougate Unitarian Chapel, York, UK Although York may be a chilly place in December, Jessica Quiñones played a spicy selection of hot-blooded Latin flute music at this charity recital for the York community.
Also joining her were 11 very talented members of the Quiñones Flute Studio.
We were happy to welcome professional pianists David Hammond and Catherine Holbrook as accompanists.
It was a relaxed evening of beautiful flute music with all kinds performed including a variety of classical and christmas tunes! Jessica, David and Catherine rounded off the evening with the chilled Latin flute sounds of Mike Mower and Astor Piazzolla that kept us and cozy all night long.

What happens when you get lots of the industry's British flute players together for the annual British Flute Society Christmas Party? Lots of wine, laughter--and of course 'talking shop'. Jessica met up with session vocalist and singer/songwriter Emi Jarvi and Australian-based flutist Agatha Yim at this annual BFS flute event.

Jessica travelled to the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne to meet Paulina Fain, a tango flautist that can PLAY like no one else!! Paulina of 'Duo Fain Mantega' is from Buenos Aires. During the trip Jessica worked with Paulina and pianist Exequiel Mantega to explore the 'language of the tango'. Special thanks goes out to the Music Department at the University of Huddersfield who made this trip possible.

The Keswick School invited Jessica to come along and give a flute masterclass and workshop for their flute students. While many of these flautists were preparing for upcoming exams, Jessica talked about ways to improve tone through minor embouchure changes and more effective ways to hold the flute. We also experimented with a new warm-up routine and got everyone learning some new extended techniques. What fun! Thanks to Dorothy Purcell for organizing this event and to all the Keswick School music faculty.
March 2009-British Flute Society (BFS) Flute Play-Along Day, York, UK
Jessica gave a flute workshop at this special British Flute Society event. She delivered new ideas to warm-up on your flute with scale games and harmonics and all with a fresh approach to breathing.
March 2009- Jessica and Tim New join forces for a composition workshop for flautists, The Mount School, York, UK Yorkshire Composer Tim New (see pic on right) and Jessica joined forces to give a class on composing for flute. Tim New is an experienced and talented composer and we were very glad to have him come and talk to Jessica's students!

Jessica gave a laughter filled class with "Sightreading Doesn't Have to Be So Scary". Because most flautists get anxious when they have to sightread...we looked at ways to improve sightreading, practiced sightreading and more importantly learned ways to not be afraid!

Pianist Catherine Holbrook and Jessica collaborated to perform the stunning music of Gaubert in honor of Catholic Aid. At this Valentine's Day Soiree, they were joined by many Yorkshire musicians in a beautiful English castle. What a great way to celebrate Valentine's Day!
January, 2009, A round of applause for flautist Alison Stephenson, a member of the Quinones Flute Studio. She was interviewed on BBC2's program "See Hear" to convey her experiences as a deaf flautist. In the program she was asked to interpret sound based on feeling vibrations-- fascinating! She was a star in the show and we are so proud of her for proving that flute players do not have to hear in the traditional sense to make gorgeous sounds.
December, 2008, Merchant Taylor's Hall, York The York Settlement Players, Jessica Quinones, and Dave Hammond, piano, performed tango music by Astor Piazzolla in aid of York Against Cancer. York Against Cancer is a local Charity established in 1987 dedicated to helping and supporting people affected by cancer in York and the surrounding area. Their mission is to work with healthcare professionals to improve the lives of cancer patients, their carers and families in York and the surrounding area. They do this by funding research, education, information and support.

November, 2008, Jessica Quinones gives a masterlcass on Performance Issues, York, St. Olave's Church Hall Jessica Quinones led ten members of the York Community to experiment with exercises from Barry Green's Inner Game of Music. Flautists worked on "giving themselves permission to fail", "playing from memory with confidence" and "embracing the ridiculous. This had Andrew playing his flute whilst lying down (surprisingly beautiful), Jimmy impersonating James Galway for a "live DVD appearance" and Kathryn finding inspiration from her blue cashmere scarf. It was an evening with a lot of laughs
October 2008, UK, Jessica recorded some flute improvisation along with musicians James Carmichael (guitar, producer, engineer) and Emi Jarvi (vocals). The 3rd annual Summer Rhapsody Concert Series-- The American Recital
Jessica Quinones was joined by Denver pianist Stephanie Morrison to present a recital of music written by American composers. The recital featured stunning works by Lowell Liebermann, Aaron Copland, Robert Muczynski, Barber, and Joseph Schwantner.
In addition, Jessica and Stephanie premiered a piece by Madison composer Carrol DeCamp (pic above) that was written especially for them. His beautiful and jazzy arrangement of "Londonderry Air" was by far one of the audience favourites!

The Quinones Flute studio raised £100 for Yorkshire based charity Music and the Deaf, MatD, at our 5th of July studio concert. With 10 different flautists performing everything from the Beatles to Copland, there was music for all tastes!!
The evening included a heartwarming talk from Danny Lane of MatD about his experiences with the charity. The concert was also made extra special when Alison Stephenson, a deaf musician, amazed everyone with her rendition of Muczynski's preludes for solo flute. Jessica Quinones also premiered "Passions" a piece written for her by York composer Tim New.

Jessica played Saint Saens in A Christmas Celebration of music and recitals - staged by the York Settlement Players and in benefit of the charity York Against Cancer.
